Many individuals who pursue a degree in criminal justice choose to become security guards. Besides enjoying a higher salary, many security officers have a more stable work environment than that of police officers. Some security jobs provide opportunities to learn advanced technical skills such as working with advanced surveillance equipment.

Although some security guard positions may be mundane with routine perimeter walks and video surveillance monitoring, the positions require individuals to stay on guard all the time and to be conscientious of things out of the ordinary. Security guards often work closely with the police when there is an incident and often provide valuable surveillance footage as well as witness accounts.

Private security companies may provide unarmed or armed security in uniform or plainclothes. They may provide electronic security surveillance or vehicle inspection and bomb detection. They may also offer executive and personal protection
